Leading and Film Making

Trying our hands at film making has given me some prospective.  What does it mean to be a leader/director?  How do you captivate and motivate the folks around you?

Is it Passion? Expertise? Being gracious? Being uncompromising? Losing arguments? Losing sleep?

Possibly a combination of all.

Eventually, being the boss means you can call the crew and inform them where they need to be, and then inform them that you are gonna sleep a bit more.

It means giving trust to the crew that YOU put together. Will they respect you and carry out your commands?

Trusting that YOU will be OK with what THEY did is completely essential.  The best crews in the world respect their leader and that respect is MUTUAL.

That is what being a boss is.  You care more than anyone else.  You always give feedback, hopefully good but "they can't all be gems".

Leading is more about giving an example about how to react and deal with the stimulus that is presented.

The best bosses I have ever worked with were mainly friends that would be honest with me.

They were overly prepared. Always packed "too much" back up equipment.  I used to resent that overly prepared shite, ......now, I embody it.
